Bay Area Lucid:
The Art of
Consciousness and the Sound of Sexual Confidence
The headline band was Candy From
Strangers, a hard pop rock, glam punk assault on boredom if there ever
was one. Ruby Jordan, the tough, gutsy, pleasure lovin singer projects
her complete immersion in life, her total oneness with her feelings, her
openess to all that is around her, and her willingness to share her self
with her band and her audience in a way that picks up the excitement
level of living itself. While wearing stilleto heeled black boots, she
manages to still come across as strong and stable, a force to be
reckoned with. She is no trembling flower of a girl, but full of
beautiful testosterone and panache, appealing to all sexes, bringing out
their own desire to release inhibitions, to accept their hedonism, to
celebrate the power of woman. Her moves were intimate, as she would
crouch on the floor, bend across the stage, accentuate not so much just
her undeniable beauty as her own love for sexual freedom of expression,
confidence, and range. When she would move into the crowd, coming close
to audience members, her eyes were wickedly impish, her smile
conspiratorial, her energy scintillating. (Read

Cat Butt Tattoo
Yes, Candy From Strangers have entitled their latest album Cat Butt
Tattoo, but not without good reason. With its thunderous drums and sweet
harmonies, the tracks swallow you into a seedy Ramones-infused world of
late night carousing. The well-crafted rockers are sung mostly by Ruby
Jordan, a soulful black cat who delivers images of fast times and
scribbled phone numbers in a voice that cries for leaving it all behind
for good this time. Guitarist/vocalist Pauli Gray is excellent
throughout. His screaming leads and tasty riffs call to mind Thin Lizzy,
X, Bad Religion, The Cars and Blue Oyster Cult. While a late 1970s New
York sound pervades, "Just For You" departs from the formula, harkening
back to a Gold Rush-era burlesque. The album's anthemic closer "Not Like
Everybody Else" -- which features Gray sharing lead vocals with Jordan
-- will leave listeners aching to hear more of Gray's casual and
confident swagger.

Cat Butt Tattoo
The band and I were introduced to each other through Ginger Coyote a
mutual friend of ours and I'm glad the band contacted me as they really
are an enjoyable band. It would be easy to say these are a good melodic
Rock N Roll band but that would be too easy. There's many influences to
this band from Cheap Trick to Garbage to Janes Addiction to Led Zeppelin
and with it comes infectious tunes that just want to make you keep
blasting them out. Just listen to the opener ´Every 13´ and ´I Got You´
to see what I'm getting at. I have to mention ´Strange Ride´ as this is
probably one of the best songs I've heard this year. And following that
is ´Shallow Grave´ which is another bouncy number. ´Just For You´ is a
great example of excellent Rock Roll and while ´Just For You´ is a short
number it’s a very valid track on here. ´Not Like Everybody Else´ the
closing track on this CD is the icing on the cake. Ruby Jordan has a
wicked voice and backed up by an excellent band so I can see these doing
well given the right breaks.

"Devoid of any
pretentious, fluffy mewling, CFS is a good old-fashioned punk band
without the overly jaded drug/booze sodden indifference.
They have a
good tight sound, well composed rhythms, energetic beat and most
importantly tremendous vocals that never try to overreach the music.
Every thing fits together seamlessly, raucously, providing a good time
for band and audience alike."

"In a world of pre-fab, pre-packaged, cookie
cutter acts -- it is nice to know that real music is still being written
and played. I am a longtime fan of guitarist Paul Gray and a new fan of
Candy from Strangers. I continue to marvel at Gray's songwriting,
uniquely thought provoking. His craft of guitar playing is pure sex in
motion. The relationship between this man and his guitar is fluid,
lyrical and passionate. "

“When Ruby consulted
with me about her career as a performing artists she mentioned her
desire to produce an album that more fully captures the bands sound and
intensity. I understood her more when I saw how contrasting the music
and the live performance of it was. Candy From Strangers has come a long
way over the years mastering song writing, stage performance and
venturing into the world of professional recording. The fan base
is loyal and stretches over the north and south of California and the
East Coast.
In a recent show at Studio Z in San Francisco Gina May Montel (drummer)
caught a number of peoples attention in the audience. It was clear
that Ruby (lead singer) is a performer that captivates and entices her
fans to want more. Not because she does not give her all, but because
what she gives is what fans seem to need. She commented that
Primus was playing around for years before they struck a chord that
mobilized the masses…. explaining to me that it takes time for a band to
find their sound and make their mark.
Candy From Strangers is working on a new album that promises a sound
Ruby stated will reflect the direction they are pursuing as musicians. A
little marketing research could prove this band has a much younger
audience than one might think, but that is just one hypothesis that
could be contradicted….especially by the newer album coming out soon.”
